By the time the first group of iGeners turned\nfive-years-old, Y2K and the worry of crashing computer networks saturated the\nnews. With technology tied to their earliest memories, it\u2019s easy to understand\nwhy iGen views work and school unlike any generation before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To discover more about this unique group and\ntrends on the horizon in education and workplace design, Steelcase visited the\n10th anniversary of Clerkenwell Design Week in London. There, Orangebox Digital\nManager Nathan Hurley talked about \u201cSmartlearning: How iGen\u2019s Educational Experience\nWill Impact the Workplace.\u201d He provided insights on what makes this generation\ndifferent than its predecessors and six trends he believes are impacting higher\neducation institutions and workplace design today and in the years to come.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>1. Smartlearning: Big Business and Bigger Brands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>iGen adults view themselves as constant customers, even when it comes to\neducation. Instead of only seeking out a university known for its academic\nexcellence, Hurley describes how students are \u201cshopping\u201d for the one that will\nprovide the experience they are looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To capture their attention, higher educational institutions are investing in selling a lifestyle, branding themselves the same way big-name companies do.&nbsp;Researchers from London Metropolitan University&nbsp;surveyed over 190 young adults who were likely to enter college on the marketing effects of three universities. The results show students value branding elements focused on a university\u2019s social environment, and the amount of student support offered, much higher than more traditional marketing materials centered on the institution\u2019s mission and values when evaluating a university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>2. The Social Campus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The library is the new student union. Transitioning from a place for\nquiet, focus work, libraries are now hyperconnected spaces where students can\nwork alone or together in a range of environments. Innovative designs cater to\nstudent needs, offering them a choice over when, where and how they want to\nwork to be the most productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After studying and collaborating in beautiful libraries, iGen graduates\noften enter workplaces that lack the technology and performance they expect.\nDowngrading in terms of space, functionality and design leaves them with a\nlarge potential for dissatisfaction with the workplace. Hurley cautions\norganizations must prioritize technology and offer a range of spaces to attract\nand retain the best talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>3. Flipped Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all heard the 4 Cs \u2014 communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. Companies today are seeking these soft skills in students, so it\u2019s vital they are developed and honed in higher education. One pedagogy that fosters these behaviors is flipped learning, where students watch pre-recorded video lectures by their professors at home and do homework with peers in the classroom. A flipped classroom requires a different design approach, one that encourages mobility, group work and interacting with information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>4. University YouTube<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is little iGen can\u2019t learn on YouTube. In 2017 YouTube reported\npeople watch over 1 billion hours of video on the platform every day. iGen is\nfamiliar with online learning, and they prefer it to traditional methods. This\nconfidence in online education led to popularity in Massive Open Online Courses\n(MOOCs), says Hurley, where anyone, anywhere can learn a range of things on\ndemand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These courses have an impact on physical space, suggesting it be more\nfluid so it mirrors the digital realm students are versed in. Education\ninstitutions and workplaces should consider gravitating to more informal and\nflexible tools for learning, so students and workers stay up-to-date and\nengaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>5. Career Tinder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>iGen isn\u2019t trying to find a job for life; they don\u2019t even consider\nhaving the same job for a decade, says Hurley. With an open mind for potential\npositions, apps like Switch App and Labour Xchange provide instant access to\nthousands of job opportunities, allowing many iGeners to swipe left or right\nfor a new job in the same way they do to find a date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, what happens with recruiters? And how do organizations entice\niGen workers to stay when a new job is a click away? The answers to these\nquestions aren\u2019t fully developed, but Hurley advises we are now in the perfect\nstorm to rethink education and the physical space in which learning and working\nhappens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>6. Sticky Campus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Google offers everything an employee needs on campus \u2014 free food for every meal, gyms, massage therapists \u2014 the perks are so good, workers stay. Universities are following the lead of innovative companies like Google, notes Hurley. For the first time, higher education institutions are interested in experiential design, creating campuses that are open 24\/7 and offer the optimal experience, an experience so great students can\u2019t imagine leaving.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img class=\"wp-image-20036\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<h3>TECH TO CLOSE THE GAP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While some universities are forward-thinking,\nthe vast majority are far behind in preparing iGen for the future. Research\nfrom Gallup shows there is a huge gap between chief academic officers of\ncolleges and universities who say they prepare students for the workforce (96%)\nand only 11% of corporations that say they do. With Google, YouTube and other\nchannels becoming education platforms and iGen needing to learn new skills\nthroughout their life to successfully shift careers, the world of learning is\nprime for a massive change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin this shift, businesses and\nuniversities would be wise to learn from each other, said Hurley. Companies can\nlook to modern libraries to learn how to be more flexible and less\nhierarchical. Universities can learn from innovative organizations on how to\noffer perks and benefits that make students want to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the world of learning and work must\nevolve to attract and retain iGen talent.
