The changes, at first, may feel surreal, with people wearing masks, separated by partitions and avoiding physical contact \u2013 no more fist bumps, hugs or handshakes. It might be a little lonely because many of our coworkers will still be at home as the business <\/strong>will slowly <\/strong>and gradually restart<\/strong>. But over time a new \u201cnormal\u201d will emerge. There is a lot of conjecture about what \u201cnormal\u201d will be going forward, but we know that the global Covid-19 pandemic will change the workplace<\/strong> forever. The opportunity ahead of us is to make the office even better than it was before the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wave 1: Responding in the Now<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The immediate priority for businesses, and other organizations is to bring people back to work<\/strong> as quickly and safely <\/strong>as possible. People are weary of the personal <\/strong>and economic toll<\/strong> the pandemic has taken on their lives. Their priority is to get back to work so they can provide for themselves and their families, but only if they feel safe doing it. That means organizations need to RETROFIT <\/strong>the workplace with what they have today, using the health guidelines<\/strong> available now, to keep the first wave of workers \u2013 up to 50% \u2013 safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design Ideas: <\/em>Sensible strategies include practicing physical distancing<\/strong>, like moving desks apart and removing chairs, adding barriers, enhancing cleaning and safety measures, as well as supporting those who are working from home<\/strong> longer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Wave 2: Planning for the Near-term<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As the first wave of workers adjust, organizations can start implementing changes to RECONFIGURE <\/strong>the workplace that will feel more natural<\/strong> and allow more people <\/strong>to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design Ideas:<\/em> This could include new layouts<\/strong> in the space to help physical distancing feel more comfortable <\/strong>such as adding new elements to workstations, like glass or higher screens. New bleach-cleanable fabrics will be introduced. Travel is likely to be limited for some time, which means the workplace needs to provide more and better options for videoconferencing<\/strong>. Some organizations will continue to support working from home as a strategy to reduce density<\/strong> in the workplace, where others may redeploy real estate<\/strong> in new ways.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Wave 3: Looking Toward the Far<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The pandemic seems to condense time, and days feel like weeks. So, the \u201cfar\u201d may not be that far away. There will be an urgency to not just get back to where we were, but to move forward<\/strong>, be resilient and thrive. As we REINVENT <\/strong>the workplace, science-based solutions <\/strong>will integrate with emerging technology<\/strong> to deliver employee safety <\/strong>and an even higher level of employee wellbeing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design Ideas:<\/em> This means that planning paradigms driven by density and costs need to shift \u2013 think adaptability<\/strong> instead of permanence, fluid <\/strong>instead of fixed. People have a whole new appreciation for being together <\/strong>and want to feel a renewed sense of community<\/strong>. Virtual <\/strong>and physical experiences <\/strong>will bring people together in new ways to create a sense of belonging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
