They\u2019re struggling to keep them. Research shows that patterns in work tenure are changing. Just last year in France, 20 percent of employees said they planned to stay with their employer for life, down from 30 percent just two years prior. In Germany, the drop was 15 percent (from 40 percent to 25 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how does the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternativ.be\/en\/six-education-work-trends-from-generation-igen\/\">next generation <\/a>want to work<\/strong>? And, how can the <strong>workplace <\/strong>support those desires?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what 23 <strong>students <\/strong>from the AMD Academy of Fashion &amp; Design in Hamburg set out to define. In an initiative driven by <strong>AIT-Dialog<\/strong>, brandherm + krumrey interior architecture and <strong>Steelcase<\/strong>, the students were tasked with <strong>conceptualizing<\/strong> and <strong>creating <\/strong>a <strong>common vision of the future of work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativ.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/New-generation-3-e1564582945966.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20154\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativ.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/New-generation-4-e1564582980445.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20139\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Guiding principles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During several <strong>workshops<\/strong>, the students defined the <strong>guiding principles <\/strong>around what their <strong>ideal work experience <\/strong>would look and feel like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Flexibility and freedom<\/li><li>Creativity, fun and wellbeing at work<\/li><li>Good work-life balance<\/li><li>Networking within hierarchies and disciplines<\/li><li>Working independently within existing work structures<\/li><li>Tolerant and open working styles, free of rigidity<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center\">\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativ.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/New-generation-1-e1564582994984.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20133\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.alternativ.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/New-generation-5-e1564582988602.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20136\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>The concept<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once they defined the principles, they got to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe started by thinking about the <strong>different areas <\/strong>we spend our time throughout the day and how they\u2019re changing in a dynamic way,\u201d said Pia Schwarz, a student involved in the project. \u201cAll three areas \u2013 home, work and free time \u2013 are equally important in our life, so we wanted to represent them using three equally sized areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They imagined a <strong>future <\/strong>where everyday life dictates where and how people work. Their final \u201c<strong>Work To Go<\/strong>\u201d concept combines three individual spaces \u2013 \u201c<strong>Office<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>Home<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Free Space<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 all connected by an area they called \u201c<strong>Mindroom<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their user-centered approach led them to create<strong> flexible spaces<\/strong> that empowered users to decide where and when to work. Meanwhile, <strong>digital <\/strong>and <strong>analog <\/strong>bin all four areas <strong>facilitated individual work<\/strong>, <strong>learning <\/strong>and <strong>networking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to be able to work from anywhere and easily integrate family life with our professional life\u201d, said Nicola Voss, a student involved in the project. \u201c<strong>Communication <\/strong>was also key to allow for <strong>exchange <\/strong>and <strong>learning<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Concept to creation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The students worked with brandherm + krumrey interior architecture interior designer Anja Rosenberg, AIT Dialog and Steelcase\u2019s Joachim M\u00fceller Wedekind to bring their concept to life at <strong>Orgatec<\/strong>, a <strong>biennial international trade fair <\/strong>in Cologne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at their work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>Office<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This space is designed to <strong>encourage communication, structure, information and focus<\/strong>. With <strong>individual <\/strong>and <strong>group workspaces<\/strong>, as well as <strong>mobile furniture<\/strong>, it\u2019s built to support a variety of <strong>workstyles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>Home<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A place for <strong>rejuvenation<\/strong>, <strong>eating <\/strong>and <strong>sleeping<\/strong>, the <strong>cozy living area <\/strong>encourages people to relax. But, it\u2019s also a place where they can get work done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>Free space<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This area inspires <strong>movement<\/strong>, <strong>nature<\/strong>, and <strong>vitality<\/strong>. The relaxed and natural atmosphere enables people to move freely, similar to a caf\u00e9-like environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>Mindroom<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated in the middle, this space <strong>connects <\/strong>the others and <strong>supports networking<\/strong>, <strong>information exchange <\/strong>and <strong>communication<\/strong>.
